After the Test Drive

If you haven’t already done so, take a few moments at the end of your test drive to put your thoughts and impressions on paper. Don’t leave anything out. These notes are vital to your mechanic. Even if you think a certain sound, smell or vibration might very well be nothing at all, write it down and try to describe it. Basically, a good mechanic already knows what to look for, but your notes will focus his attention on those potential problem areas you have noticed. When he does his own test drive and mechanical inspection, he will then either corroborate your comments and give you an estimate of how much it will cost to repair these things, or he’ll tell you that a certain sound, smell or vibration is nothing to worry about.

If you suspect a serious mechanical problem at this point, you have these options:

  1. Walk away
  2. Buy the car and take your chances.
  3. Have the problem checked out by a professional mechanic, who will tell you that:
  4. The car is slightly flawed, but won’t cost as much to fix as you feared; or
  5. The car is seriously worn or damaged, or not as good as it looks.

But first, before taking the car to a professional, there are all kinds of things you can check out yourself, as we’ll show you in the next Chapter.
