The Corolla has had a rework. The seventh generation car of this veritable institution has a new look, but over and above these stylistic changes, it also just keeps getting better all around. This 4-door sedan is sold in VE, CE and LE trim levels that are equipped with a 120 hp. 1.8L engine.

WHAT WE LIKED:

• This car is remarkably reliable and durable, so it benefits from an above-average resale value. Corolla’s are pretty darn hard to find on used car lots and they cost a pretty penny as well.
• The ultra-conservative body design has become a classic. It’s well-proportioned and isn’t afflicted with fussy stylistic frills, so it stays in style year after year.
• The cabin seats four adults quite comfortably and rear seat access is super with the good-sized doors that open nice and wide.
• Driving is neat with such smooth controls, comfy driver’s seat, good peripheral vision and logical dashboard layout.
• The 1.8L engine is more agile and athletic than the former model, for even when linked to the automatic transmission, it provides respectable accelerations and pickup. It’s fuel-efficient too, since it rarely burns more than 10 liters per 100 km.
• Handling is neutral and stable, so anyone can drive a Corolla with confidence, that is, if it’s equipped with competent tires.
• Ride comfort is just great for a car of this size, the suspension is nice and flexible, there’s good soundproofing and the front seats are nicely shaped and upholstered, which isn’t the case for the flat as a flapjack rear seatbench.
• On the practical side, there are lots of nice features.
