The ’99 Lineup – Sonata

All-new is an overused term, but with new engines and drivetrain, chassis, body structure, exterior styling, and interior, it truly applies to the 1999 Sonata.

Standard in the base GL model is a 2.4 L DOHC Sirius II four-cylinder engine, rated at 148 hp, while GLS models are equipped with the all-new, all-aluminum 2.5 L DOHC delta V-6, rated at 163 hp. Both are mated to a new electronically-controlled four-speed automatic transmission -with fuzzy logic, in the GLS.

In addition to standard dual front airbags and front seat-belt pre-tensioners, the Sonata offers available side airbags on the GLS. And all Sonatas include automatic disabling of the passenger-side airbags if the seat is unoccupied, or occupied by a baby or small child. On GLS models four-wheel-disc brakes are standard, and ABS is optional.

On the road, the Sonata exudes quiet – a result of extensive measures to eliminate or reduce NVH (noise/vibration/harshness). And like all Hyundais, it offers a long list of standard features to enhance comfort and convenience. Overall, it is a world-class vehicle that can compete with the mid-sized class leaders in every way – with or without consideration of price.

2010 Ford Focus

In 2011, Ford opened up the garage doors for its global Focus that will be sold in all world markets in four-door hatchback and wagon (versions we haven’t got in North America since 2007), and four-door sedan. North American Focus models get a new 2.0-litre direct injected and variable valve timed four-cylinder engine that puts out 160 hp (up 20 from the current engine) and improves economy by 10%.

A five-speed manual transmission is expected to be the standard transmission, with a new six-speed automatic optional. A stop/start system aids in improving fuel economy on European engines (small fours and diesel variants) but it’s not known whether the system will be available on the 2.0L engine.

In keeping with the recent trend at Ford, the new Focus is packed with the latest technologies. Front and centre is the new MyFord system that owners can custom tailor to suit individual preferences. On the high-end series, most of the controls are handled through a touch-screen display. Sync is, of course, part of the deal, with the ability to control sound, ambiance, navigation and communication devices by voice.

On the safety front, Focus gets a version of the Volvo City Safety system that uses sensors to determine if a frontal collision (at speeds below 30 km/h) is imminent and stops the car (by reducing throttle input and applying brake force) if the driver doesn’t take action. Other systems available include parking assist, lane departure, adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection.

A product of Ford’s high-performance divisions(including SVT) a new Focus ST will be based on the four-door hatchback version. Power comes from an EcoBoost (turbocharged) version of the 2.0L “four”. It makes an estimated 250 hp and peak torque of 265 lb.-ft . Control is entrusted to a six-speed manual transmission.

The ST differentiates itself from the regular Focus with unique front and rear looks, more muscular fenderwork, unique alloy wheels and a high mounted spoiler. Inside, Recaro racing style seats, metal pedals and a carbon-fibre look console add to the sporty flavour. All Focus models get a new Torque Vectoring Control system up front that distributes torque between the front wheels and helps reduce understeer, improve traction and produce better turn-in to enhance handling. The ST gets a lowered chassis and special suspension tuning.

Focus sedans and wagons are due to go into production in fall 2010 in Michigan, with a launch slated toward the end of 2010. The ST model is due for a 2012 launch.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

For the average automotive consumer in the past decade, more and more automakers are investing time and money into these vehicles, albeit with mixed results. For every Prius, there’s the possibility of an Aspen Hybrid.

Which is why Hyundai took its time releasing a gas-electric model into its lineup. Though an Elantra LPI (Liquid Petroleum Injection) mild-hybrid was released to the Korean market in 2009, the company’s first full-hybrid is the Sonata Hybrid, which will be hitting showrooms in early 2011.

Unlike many other automakers who share hybrid technology or simply buy an existing system outright, the Sonata uses a new, Hyundai developed hybrid system called Direct Hybrid Blue Drive.

Without getting too technical, it differs from other hybrid systems in a few ways, one being that the electric motor is separated from the transmission gearset. This will allow Hyundai to mix and match different sized motors and transmission types in future hybrids.

The gas-electric Sonata is also the only current midsize hybrid sedan that doesn’t use a continuously variable transmission. It uses essentially the same 6-speed automatic that was debuted in the 2011 Sonata. It’s less mechanically complex while being lighter and more compact than those transmissions found in competitor’s vehicles.

What this all adds up to is less cost to the customer if a problem arises and the time comes to fix or replace different parts of the drivetrain.

Then there’s the battery pack. Instead of lithium ion or nickel-metal-hydride batteries used in competiting vehicles, Hyundai uses lithium polymer batteries, which don’t lose their ability to charge as quickly.

They’re also able to boost the Sonata more often, and for longer periods of time. Not only are all-electric startups and driveaways more common, but the Sonata hybrid can also drive at higher speeds on all-electric power.

Hyundai claims a 100 km/h EV-only limit, though we swear we reach the equivalent of about 120 km/h, assuming the vehicle isn’t lying to us when the ‘EV’ light pops up in the instrument panel! That’s another advantage Hyundai is touting – it’s claiming the Sonata’s highway fuel economy is better than any competitor, which is noteworthy because North Americans spend more of their time driving on the highway.

In addition, the lithium polymer batteries are smaller (they have the same shape and thickness as a licence plate, but are about half the size), meaning that when 72 of them get stacked together into one pack, they don’t take up as much trunk space. Sure enough, the Sonata even has a small pass through into the rear seats, something unheard of in competitors’ cars.

Though this is all coof stuff, there’s no denying the Sonata Hybrid feels like, well, like a hybrid. It has decent power numbers, and the 6-speed transmission is more fun than any CVT we can think of, but it still feels somewhat lazy when accelerating from a complete stop.

With eco-gauges and fuel efficiency minigames all the rage these days, the Sonata Hybrid has an overall meter that measures how efficient a driver you are.

It rates the driver from 1-99 (99 being the best), but we have no idea how it works or what exactly it’s based on. It feels gimmicky more than anything. The Sonata Hybrid get some exterior tweaks as well to spice things up, such as snazzy jeweled project-lens headlights with LED accents and an in-your-face hexagonal grille. Some changes are functional as well, such as aerodynamic bumper fascias and rocker panels to improve air flow for – you guessed it – improved fuel efficiency.

Here’s hoping customers are savvy enough to really look at the new stuff the Sonata Hybrid brings to the table, and see it as more than ‘just another hybrid.’ It’s greatest features are the stuff most people will rarely, if ever, see.
